President Nana Akufo-Addo has commented on whether or not the activities of LGBTQ people are legal in Ghana.

When asked about the anti-LGBTQ bill while hosting Kamala Harris as the vice president of the United States in the Jubilee House, Akufo-Addo replied, “We shall see.”

He claims that the attorney general has been instructed to review the proposed legislation and ensure that any provisions that violate individual rights are removed.

Akufo-Addo insisted that he could not definitively say whether or not the activities of LGBTQ people would be legalized in Ghana until the bill was passed by parliament and received his assent.

In order to prevent the government from passing laws that restrict other people’s freedom, Kamala Harris insisted that everyone’s rights, regardless of their sexual orientation, be upheld.

Although Akufo-Addo did not express the government’s position unequivocally, he acknowledged that a majority of Ghanaians support the passage of the anti-gay legislation and said he would monitor the situation once all the procedures had been completed.

The Anti-Gay Bill, which seeks to decriminalize the behaviors of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, etc. in Ghana, has been championed by MP Sam George.

Meanwhile, the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which has been with the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee of parliament since last year, is now ready to be presented to the house for debate, according to Samuel Nartey George, a member of parliament for Ningo-Prampram.

His admission comes at a time when Vice President Kamala Harris of the United States of America, who is currently on a tour of Africa, has called for respect for the human rights of LGBTQ+ people.

Sam George claims that because the Attorney General has given his approval for the bill in its present form, there is no obstacle preventing it from being introduced in parliament for discussion and eventual passage into law.
