On Friday, March 24, the minority in parliament opposed the confirmation of Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu and Justice George Kingsley Koomson as candidates for the Supreme Court.

Samuel Adibu Asiedu and Barbara Ackah-Yensu, however, received approval from the group.

The caucus argued that Justice Gaewu was unqualified to sit on the bench of the supreme court because he was running for parliament on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ticket.

Muntaka Mubarak, a former Minority Chief Whip and member of parliament for Asawase, suggested that his support would be “a bad reflection on the House. When you set a bad precedent, tomorrow is the yardstick for others to make this same demand.”

The Minority insisted that Mr. George Koomson “just joined the Court of Appeal” and that other capable and qualified justices could have been promoted to the Supreme Court in his place.

“When you set a bad precedent, tomorrow it becomes the yardstick for others to make this same demand,” the former Minority Chief Whip added.

If the MPs are unable to agree, a secret balloting procedure will be expected to be used to approve the proposal.
