In Parliament, Thursday was a dramatic day. Arguments over the report on President Akufo-Addo’s new ministerial appointees, in particular, had intensified the day’s business.
It called for a suspension, which was followed by a resumption and evening of discussion without resolution.
But the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, made a remark that made the entire House laugh.
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the deputy majority leader, led the effort to support the nominated ministers during the debate.
However, the Speaker seemed to take exception to his apparent propensity for making obscene hand gestures whenever he was debating on the floor on this particular occasion.
Mr. Bagbin joked rather hilariously that he would have the legislator’s hand severed.
“Deputy Majority Leader, one day I will give a directive that this your hand that you’ve been swinging, it be cut off,” he told the Effutu MP.
Both Minority and Minority MPs erupted in raucous laughter.
When Minority Chief Whip Kwame Governs Agbodza defended his side’s decision to reject the new appointees, Mr. Afenyo-Markin threw his hands in the air.
The Minority’s stance on not approving the new ministerial appointments has not changed.
The Minority is attempting to have the government shrink by refusing.
However, the Speaker of the House postponed the choice until today.
