Three new members have been sworn in to work for the Ghanaian Electoral Commission (EC) by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
They are Salima Armed Tijani, Dr. Peter Appiahene, and Rev. Akua Ofori Boateng.
They take the place of Mrs. Rebecca Kabukie Adjalo, Mr. Ebenezer Aggrey-Fynn, and Mrs. Hajia Sa-Adatu Maida, who have all retired.
They now work alongside Mrs. Jean Mensa, Mr. Samuel Tettey, Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, Ms. Adwoa Asuama Abrefa, and Mrs. Jean Mensa as Chairperson, Deputy Chairman for Operations, Deputy Chairman for Corporate, and Commissioner, respectively.
According to Article 43 (1 and 2) of the 1992 Constitution, their appointment is in accordance with, “there shall be an Electoral Commission which shall consist of a chairman, two deputy chairmen, and four other members.”
The members of the commission shall be appointed by President under article 70 of this Constitution.”
On Monday, March 20, 2023, at a brief swearing-in ceremony held at the Jubilee House, Nana Addo noted that the three had taken the oaths of office, allegiance, and secrecy “have come to the office some 21 months to the 2024 general elections and at a time when Ghana seeks to entrench her credentials as a beacon of democracy in Africa.”
Dr. Peter Appiahene
At the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Dr. Peter Appiahene served as the patron of the NPP’s student wing, TESCON.
Three individuals, including Dr. Appiahene, a lecturer, were sworn in by Nana Addo as new members of the EC.
He has been a TESCON Patron for the past eight years, and after Nana Addo was sworn in as president in 2017, he was being considered for a political appointment.
Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani
With nearly 20 years of experience, Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani (née Salima Sani Mahama) is a banker.
She works for the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) as a Senior Remittance Officer.
She has a Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Development Studies (UDS), a Master of Business Administration in Project Management (GIMPA), and she is currently enrolled in the MSc Finance program at the Accra Business School.
She holds memberships in the Board Room Institute and the Chartered Institute of Bankers.
Rev Akua Ofori-Boateng
The Director of Programs for the Anglican Diocese of Accra, Rev Akua Ofori-Boateng also served on the 2020 Eminent Advisory Committee of the Ghanaian Electoral Commission (EC) and is a member of the United States Trade Advisory Committee on Africa.
