Dr. Anthony Osei Akoto, a former member of parliament for the Ashanti Region’s Old Tafo constituency, has passed away.
On Monday, March 20, 2023, this was announced on Parliament’s Facebook page.
The former finance minister, who was 69 years old, died without leaving any clear details.
“Former Old Tafo MP, Hon. Dr Anthony Osei Akoto passes away. May he rest in peace,” Ghana’s Parliament posted.
Dr. Akoto Osei was a licensed economist. He joined the Merchant Bank (Ghana) Ltd. management board on March 27, 2002. He previously held positions as a research assistant at the Center for Policy Analysis (Ghana) and as an associate professor at Dillard University (USA).
In May 2003, Osei served as the government’s top economic advisor while serving as the deputy minister for Finance and Economic Planning. After the passing of the previous Minister Kwadwo Baah Wiredu, he was appointed to the position of substantive Minister for Finance and Economic Planning.
He held that position until January 6, 2009, when the National Democratic Congress, which had won the 2008 General Elections, took over as the new government.
After being proposed by President Nana Akufo-Addo and passing muster in the Ghanaian parliament, Osei was sworn in as Minister of Monitoring and Evaluation in February 2017.
The ministry of Monitoring and Evaluation was recently established with the purpose of evaluating, monitoring, and planning summits and forums to review the progress of the government’s own ministries.
Anthony Akoto Osei was one of the 19 ministers named by President Nana Akufo-Addo in May 2017 to make up his cabinet. The names of the 19 ministers were submitted to the Ghanaian Parliament and made public by Rt. Hon. Prof. Mike Ocquaye, Speaker of the House.
Anthony Akoto Osei participated in the president’s inner circle as a Cabinet minister and supported important national decision-making processes.
