Chris Hughton, the coach of Ghana, has stated that he cannot promise to end Ghana’s protracted trophy drought because no coach can make such a promise.

Addressing the media at his unveiling in Kumasi on Monday, Hughton said what he can guarantee is to work hard to put the Black Stars in the best position to excel.

The 64-year-old said his goal is to implement the proper strategies, attitudes, and personnel deployments to help the team reach its objectives.

“Coaches cannot guarantee a trophy. There is no one, because we [coaches] cannot guarantee anything,” Hughton said.

“What we can guarantee is we will work as hard as we can to put a team together; to create the right tactics, the right mentality, the right personnel to put ourselves in the best position to do that. And the first that comes is qualification, so we will work as hard as we can.”

Hughton also committed to visiting Ghana more frequently and keeping an eye on the Ghana Premier League players.

The former Brighton manager responded that things would be different in his time when asked about the apparent hesitation of recent Black Stars coaches to select players from the local league.

“I will be spending more time in Ghana. I will be watching more games. I am constantly being made aware of players who are doing well,” he told the media.

“I’ll be paying more attention to [GPL] games because it is important that we have a strong national league.”

Hughton has reportedly signed a two-year deal with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) that runs through December 2024.

He will be in charge of the Black Stars in their doubleheader 2023 AFCON qualifier against Angola as his first task as Ghana coach.

In an effort to secure a spot in the tournament for the following year, Ghana will host Angola on March 23 in Kumasi before taking on the Black Antelopes four days later in Luanda.
