When Wout Weghorst scored against Real Betis on Thursday, he was overcome with emotion and found it difficult to control his tears.
The Dutchman, who hadn’t scored since January 25 for his new team, displayed adequate predatory instincts late in the game.

Following some diligent play down the right from substitute Facundo Pellistri, Weghorst was the one to react first to Claudio Bravo’s save from Scott McTominay’s initial shot.
The striker then ran to the corner in jubilant celebration, where his United teammates quickly surrounded him as the emotion of finally scoring was evident to all.

Weghorst’s 82nd-minute goal made it 4-1 overall, capping off an impressive comeback by Erik ten Hag’s team, who were eager to put Sunday’s 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool behind them.
Weghorst’s outburst of emotion may have been a reflection of his own contribution to that defeat after the Dutchman was compelled to defend touching the famous Anfield sign prior to the game after receiving criticism for it.
With United’s next match against Premier League strugglers Southampton on Sunday, the Dutchman will likely start from the opening kickoff for Ten Hag, as he has in every game since joining in January.
How Manchester United players reacted to Weghorst’s goal
Marcus Rashford acknowledged that Wout Weghorst’s first Old Trafford goal, which occurred during Thursday night’s 4-1 Europa League victory over Real Betis, had the Manchester United team ecstatic.
Rashford was asked by BT Sport if Weghorst’s goal meant a lot to the team, said: “Yes, 100 per cent. He is a forward, he gets joy from scoring goals.
“As good as he works hard and does all the other stuff, he wants to score goals, so yes, everyone is really pleased for him.”

How many goals has Wout Weghorst scored so far?
Weghorst has managed to score only two goals for the Red Devils since joining during the January transfer window after making 26 appearances in all competition. His goal came in the Carabao Cup against Nottingham Forest and last night against Real Betis in the Europa League.
Weghorst is still seeking for his Premier League debut goal with Man United and Southampton could be his victim after ending his goal drought last night.
How many clubs has Weghorst played for?
With Emmen, Weghorst began playing professionally in the second tier of Dutch football. Prior to joining VfL Wolfsburg in 2018, he had previously played for Heracles Almelo and AZ in the Eredivisie. He was acquired by Burnley in January 2022 for a sum of £12 million after scoring 70 goals in 144 games for Wolfsburg.
What position does Weghorst play?
Weghorst is a Forward attacking player. In an association football team, the forwards play the farthest up the field and are therefore most in charge of both scoring and assisting goals. The ability to open up space for attacks is a critical component of the forward’s job, just like it is for any attacking player.
