Dr. Mustapha Ahmed, a former youth and sports minister, was sentenced to prison for contempt by the Accra High Court’s Financial and Economic Crime Division.
Dr. Ahmed received a seven-day prison sentence for trespassing on a property and disobeying a court order.
He was also fined GH12,000 or, in the event that he didn’t pay it, would have to spend 30 days in jail, the Ghanaian Times reported.
According to the report, Dr. Ahmed was named as the defendant in the case, which was initiated six years ago, and was issued a perpetual injunction prohibiting him from entering the property in question in 2019.
According to reports, the former Minister sold the property to Kofi Ammoah Kwafo, the person who filed the contempt charge, in 2000 but later claimed it back, saying she had made a mistake.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Dr. Ahmed, and the Director-General of Logistics of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) were then the targets of a contempt case brought by Mr. Kwafo.
In his application, he made note that GAF employees had refused to vacate a building constructed on the said land despite the court’s ruling.
After hearing the arguments made by each party, Justice Asare-Botwe sentenced Dr. Ahmed to seven days in jail for contempt for trespassing on the property and a GH12,000 fine.
The presiding judge also mandated that Mr. Kwafo receive GH5,000 of the fine.
Former Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency Dr. Ahmed also held the position of Sports Minister for the John Kufuor administration.
