Following a public outcry, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) removed a public statement from social media platforms.

The military has categorically stated that the military operation in Ashaiman on March 7—during which a few unarmed civilians were beaten—was authorized by the military’s high command.

According to the statement, the mission was not carried out to exact revenge for the death of Trooper Imoro Sheriff, a young soldier.

The statement, which sparked outrage and insults from the public, was later deleted by the Ghana Armed Forces.

The soldier, who lived in Ashaiman but was stationed in Suyani and taking a course in Accra, had asked permission to visit his parents there, but was discovered in a pool of blood in the early hours.

According to the GAF, the military operation in Ashaiman-Taifa and Tulaku was intended to find the criminals who committed the heinous crime. In the course of the operation, the military arrested about 184 suspects, who ranged in age from 21 to 47, and turned them over to the military police before sending them to the Ghana Police Service for further processing.
