Alhaji Habib Iddrisu, Deputy Majority Chip Whip and Member of Parliament (MP) for Tolon for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated that while it is inevitable that John Mahama will win the 2024 presidential election by a wide margin for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), he will be defeated by Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who he believes will also win the flagbearership position for the ruling NPP.
On Saturday, February 25, 2023, Alhaji Habib and the other panelists on Multimedia’s news analysis program Newsfile discussed the upcoming NDC flagbearership race and concurred that John Mahama was the presumptive flagbearer and anyone challenging him had no chance at all. However, he went on to say that John Mahama’s attempt to retake the presidency would be in vain because Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president, would defeat him in the 2024 election with cunning ease.
“I think that the three others competing with former President John Mahama are just to register their presence. He will not win anything less than 95%. So we wish him well…I don’t expect former President Mahama to win less than 95 percent of the vote. I don’t expect that.

Within the NDC, he is popular but he is going to be the easiest candidate for Dr Bawumia to beat[ in the 2024 Presidential Election],” he asserted.
In order to challenge John Mahama for the position of torchbearer, three additional NDC members have chosen nomination forms. They are Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a former governor of the Bank of Ghana, Kojo Bonsu, a former mayor of Kumasi, and Ernest Kobeah, a member of the NDC from the Gbawe Constituency.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is competing against a number of other NPP candidates, including former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong, former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyeremanten, and MP for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong. Alan Kyeremanten and Dr. Bawumia are thought to be the front-runners.
