Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is being falsely represented as the party’s preferred candidate to lead it in the elections of 2024, according to the party’s flagbearer candidate, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.

He claimed that anyone who believes Dr. Bawumia is the front-runner in the NPP’s race for president is disconnected from reality.

In the contest for flagbearership, he asserted that no one should receive special treatment.

Dr. Bawumia is not the preferred candidate, according to Agyepong’s engagements with party members, he said in an interview with Citi FM in Accra on Thursday, February 23, 2023.

“Nobody is denying him [Dr. Bawumia] his chance to contest, just that we in the NPP, we have a way of doing things. He just has to go around and talk to the party people and hope that he wins. But to try and force a coronation on us, that won’t happen. There would be no coronation in the NPP,” he said.

He also denied claims that the NPP only solicits votes from residents of the Northern Region but does not give them a chance to run for president.

He claimed that the NPP had to violate its own rules and bylaws in order to choose Dr. Bawumia as Akufo-Addo’s running-mate.

He has given the party’s delegates the duty of selecting him for the elections in 2024.

He claimed that because he personifies the party, he is deserving of being its leader in the upcoming general elections.

According to the former general secretary of the party, he is the other candidates’ most well-known member of the party.

“I am the one who is known better in the party, my roots are deeper in this party than most. And I am very confident of what I am doing,” he noted.

He is, however, willing to give it his best effort despite acknowledging that the journey won’t be easy.
