Okyeame Kwame, Ghana’s award-winning Hiplife rapper wonders if religion has limited us
In a Facebook post, Okyeame Kwame asked ‘Is religion limiting?’ before going on to further express his thoughts “I was born into a Christian home, my father was a Catholic and my mom was a member of the Methodist church, so I grew up with Christian values and strongly believe that even at the unconscious level, I still use a Bible trained conscience. After many years of practising my family’s religion, I personally wanted to answer some existential questions for “myself “ so I asked the Rasta’s, asked the Jehovah’s witnesses, asked the prophet’s, asked the Islam scholars and the Buddhist monks.
Okyeame Kwame would continue by adding “They helped but I needed more answers. So I read the Bible twice, found a Quaran, read the Geeta and every literature on spirituality and African traditional religion I laid my hands on. This broadened my horizon, but the more I read the more confused I became. Some of my major problems with using religion and ancient texts to find answers were;
- The divisive nature of God.
- The cruel nature of blood sacrifices.
- The creation of Satan.
- The violent nature of man.
- Heaven and hell.
- Trinity in monotheism.
- Death.
- Creation.
- Sin and punishment and many more”
The rapper/businessman would conclude by adding “Ironically, I came to the conclusion that, if I was to have the understanding and clarity I seek, I must have no conclusions. It will be nice to be able to say I’m a Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Traditionalist or a Rasta man. However, immediately I declare myself one, I stop myself from learning from all the wonderful loving teachings of the other opposing religions. My question, Is religion limiting?”
