Entertainment pundit and Blogger, Arnold Asamoah Baidoo has asserted that confusion amongst the originators of Hiplife killed the genre.
In an interview with 3Fm’s Showbiz, Arnold Asamoah Baidoo stated “Let’s be open and truthful with one another. Hip-hop is no longer relevant. The history of hiplife should be preserved, in my opinion, but let’s leave the question of whether we should hang on to it and continue to do so out of the discussion”
The blogger/entertainment pundit also asserted the genre is unappealing to the younger generation due to a lack of cohesion even in the name creation of the genre
Arnold Asamoah Baidoo also compared the hiplife genre’s terrible situation to the “inventor-syndrome’ and also believes another factor for its death is due to the fact that everyone wanted to create their own trends instead of combining our efforts into a whole in pushing the genre to the global stage and thus, a lack of vision would subsequently lead to the comatose of the genre.
The sometimes-controversial pundit would further add why the upcoming artists do not identify themselves with the genre stating a clear lack of patriotism “Will you want to associate with something that Ghanaians are not even proud of if you are an upcoming artist? Are we not even working together to push it? No. You will therefore continue on your chosen course”.
He would then conclude by noting how widespread the Afrobeats genre has become due to the conscious and collective efforts of the Nigerians in pushing it to the global scale and would advise Ghanaians to hold on to what little we have left of the genre by preserving its history and its contribution to the Afrobeats genre.
