Mr Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament has cautioned lawmakers against using non-parliamentary language in the House of Commons.

His warning came after the House Business Committee directed that Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta be summoned to tell MPs about retired bondholders holding protests at the Ministry of Finance for an exclusion from the domestic debt exchange scheme.

Mr Bagbin warned MPs not to speak as if they were in a ‘chop’ bar or market.

He said: “Use Parliamentary language, not the language in a chop bar or marketplace but in Parliament.”

The Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta speaking to parliament confirmed that all retirees who have not given up their old bonds for new bonds under the scheme have been exempted.

He emphasized that retirees have nothing to worry about, adding that all their coupons and principal will be paid out at maturity.

However, Ken Ofori-Atta has advised pension bond holders to stop continuing to protest at the ministry.

He said the protest over the controversial domestic debt exchnage program was unnecessary because implementation was voluntary.

He affirmed that the voluntary program has ended and that the government will honor its obligations to bondholders, including retirees who have voluntarily opted out of the program.

Speaking to retirees on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, Ofori-Atta said standing guard is no longer necessary.
