M.anifest, the award-winning rapper has in a new documentary asserted that Hiplife is dead!
In a new documentary by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) titled ‘Hiplife rewind’ which features some prominent names, M.anifest asserted the death of the genre was due to its core fanbase in the youth not identifying with it!
According to M.anifest “Hiplife is dead because the driving force of the music is the younger people and the younger people do not identify with Hiplife. The originators of Hiplife were a bit too precious about what it should be so as new versions sonically were happening, you could hear people saying, ‘Oh, this Jama, this Azonto, is watered down, it’s not real”
M.anifest would also add the non-readiness to adapt and evolve the style of the sound has contributed to the comatose of what used to be a very driving genre amongst the Ghanaian populace “these industry powers failed to identify that: “You have to evolve or perish and that is what any music form has to understand.”
He also added that major players in the Hiplife team failed to admit the change the genre would inevitably go through “Those who were gatekeeping Hiplife were refusing to acknowledge the evolution and the thing must evolve. The thing must evolve,” he stressed. “For it to survive, the thing must evolve.
The BBC-inspired documentary features talents who have made a significant contribution to the growth of the genre since its inception as well as how they aimed to make the sound appealing to the western audience. It’s a genre that has produced some of the finest names in the music industry such as Tinny, KK Fosu, Obrafuor, Lord Kenya, Okyeame Kwame, R2BEES, Sarkodie and so many more.
