Engineers and Planners founder Ibrahim Mahama has offered to pay for the treatment of Ningwie Leonard Lanyeli, a former National Science and Math Competition (NSMQ) contestant who currently suffers from bipolar disorder.

Her dreams of pursuing a career in medicine were cut short after she contracted a mental illness.

In a Facebook post, Rafik Mahama, an aide to Ibrahim Mahama said, “On behalf of Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, I contacted Nurudeeni and the family of Leonard led by Eugene. I contacted them last Saturday and earlier today (February 6). Leonard’ll receive the best medical treatment. After the treatment, he’ll complete the remaining two years of the six years programme at KNUST and subsequent post-graduate studies either in Ghana or abroad. He’ll be given the best of all the support he needs.”

Leonard attended and completed Ganaa Memorial Middle School, becoming the highest-achieving student with an overall score of 8.

He continued his education at St. Francis Xavier to take a general science course.

He acquired the name ‘Dr. Ningwie Leonard Lanyeli’ with ambition to become a doctor.

With this ambition, he managed to get 6 A’s in the WASSCE and B2, B3 and B2 exams for Biology, English and Sociology respectively in 2007.

His final result not only shows his academic prospects but also shows that he entered the NSMQ competition in 2007.

The 33-year-old was accepted to the University of Cape Coast to study medicine but was thwarted because his parents could not afford the high tuition fees at the time.

He was then admitted to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to study for a Doctor of Ophthalmology.

He told JoyNews that “I gained admission to read medicine at the University of Cape Coast at the cost of GH¢4,100 a year and my father was a teacher who couldn’t afford to pay the fees, so I opted to read optometry at KNUST.”
