The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has started an investigation into the deaths of five people last Friday in Oyibi, in the Greater Accra Region, who may have taken a popular treat called “waakye,” according to reports.

After having food from the well-known Yellow Sisi jungle restaurant, it has been reported that the victims complained of stomach problems and were later treated at several hospitals in the Oyibi area.

A total of 40 other people who ate the food are now undergoing medical attention.

When the victims, which included the waakye vendor known as Yellow Sisi and some of her family members, complained of having a severe stomach ache after eating the meal last Friday, they were taken to Valley View Hospital, Oyibi Hospital, Dodowa Hospital, and other facilities.

One of the more well-known eating restaurants at Oyibi Bush Canteen is thought to be the Yellow Sisi Waakye Joint.

The kiosk was shut and the establishment was quiet when the Daily Graphic team visited the location. Since it is assumed that the shop owners who also ate at the restaurant that day and had the adverse effects were also stated to be undergoing treatment in the hospital, a few of the nearby businesses were also shut down.

In response to a follow-up inquiry from Daily Graphic, Valley View Hospital officials confirmed the occurrence, stating that although many patients were brought to the facility in critical condition, “as of today, all the patients have been discharged,” an official added.

The Kpone Katamanso District Hospital received the hospital’s data, and further research was conducted there to determine the problem’s root cause. This was the only information the Valley View Hospital officials could provide regarding the number of persons who might have been impacted.
