Some 40 students were detained when the Regional Police Command raided the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational School in the Ashanti Region yesterday, Sunday, January 22, to defend government buildings being vandalized by wild, and the rioting students.

Before the 40 were detained, the rioting students had already flipped a teacher’s salon car upside down, broken its windows, and made all efforts to set it on fire.

In addition, they had attacked and vandalized four government vehicles, including a Mahindra pickup truck, an Isuzu pickup truck, a Nissan Patrol, and one of the school’s official buses, all of which were marked with the Ghanaian Coat of Arms and the words “Krobea Asante Technical Institute, Asokore Ash.”

The rioting students also caused damage to the Senior House Mistress’s Toyota Vitz, as if some destructive demons had gained control of their senses. They then broke into the school’s food store, where they looted and destroyed food and supplies.

They also destroyed books and furniture from the school.

The students allegedly attempted to break into some of the staff bungalows but failed, so they decided to vandalize some of the structures after being dissatisfied with the damage they had already done.

After assessing the level of the students’ damage and the security situation, the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) decided to order the school’s immediate and permanent closure on Sunday.

On Sunday morning, the angry-looking students started a spree of illegal property destruction on campus without giving any warning.

They were alleged to be upset with themselves for failing a test that was overseen by the National Board for Professional & Technician Examinations (NABPTEX).

The unruly pupils reportedly had a field day smashing the windscreens of numerous of their teachers’ automobiles, according to reports.

The school administration, which had become overrun by the students, then requested assistance from the police, who arrived quickly and detained leaders.

“The Regional Security Council has taken assessment of the situation and per the briefing and advice the school environment wouldn’t be safe for teaching and learning and so the school has been shut down,” said a deputy spokesperson for the Ghana Education Service Opoku Mensah Yaw.

“For now investigations have started, there has been some arrest and since this is a security matter. The school is under TVET service and so that fold will have to work on a report and submit to the regional education directorate and that process has started,” Mr. Opoku Mensah added.

Since then, security has been stepped significantly to thwart any potential attacks.

According to reports, individuals who were detained will undoubtedly face harsh punishment after investigations to serve as a warning to other students in the future.
