The Ghana Police Service has began investigations into a viral recording alleging that some of its officers purposefully inserted drugs in the car of a man posing as a doctor.
In the recording, the aforementioned doctor is heard describing how the police, who allegedly found illegal chemicals in his car after a check threatened and humiliated him, tried to extort money from him.
According to reports, there were four cops involved.
In the tape, the aforementioned doctor asserted that the Narcotics Control Commission, the Ghana Armed Forces, the East Legion and Accra Central Police Stations, as well as other parties, had been informed of the situation.
The East Legon and Accra Central Police Stations were not made aware of any such case, despite the voice on the audio claiming they had been, according to the Ghana Police Service, despite the fact that investigations had been opened.
“As part of the investigation, the police have also contacted the Narcotics Control Commission and the Ghana Armed Forces and both institutions have indicated that no such incident has come to their attention”, the police said in a statement.
The claimed victim’s identity has likewise remained a mystery despite all attempts to find her.
In order to help in its investigations, the police force is requesting information from the general public.
“We therefore wish to entreat the victim and any other person with relevant information on the incident to contact Telephone number 0200416540, to assist the Police investigations. This is a temporary number dedicated solely to this investigation”, the police appealed.
“We would like to assure the public that the Police Service in its quest to become an institution worthy of respect and trust in the country, and a reference point for the rest of the world, will not condone any unprofessional conduct among its officers and the Service is determined to get to the bottom of this matter. We would like to once again, urge the public to continue to support us in our transformational journey”, it added.
