Seven people have been confirmed dead with eight others in critical condition after sustaining several degrees of injuries when two Sprinter buses collided head on at Gomoa Antseadze on the Cape Coast-Accra highway today.

The eight others fighting for their lives at the St. Luke’s Catholic at Apam include an infant Hospital at Apam where they were rushed for treatment.

Speaking to the media, Apam District Fire Service Officer, ACFO Ankomah Nuamah, the driver of a Sprinter Benz bus with registration number GW 7920-22 and another Sprinter bus were racing on the road which resulted in the accident.

According to him one driver lost control of his steering during the race, causing the vehicle to somersault several times before hitting a tree on the roadside.

An eyewitness who gave a vivid account of the accident indicated he reported it to the Apam Fire Station for help, following which a rescue team was dispatched to the scene and to the rescue of survivors who were trapped and helpless from the carnage.

All seven lifeless bodies retrieved, three females and four males, have since been handed over to the Ghana Police Service to be deposited at a morgue for preservation.

The police are therefore calling on the general public to help reach out to and or provide information about the families and relatives of the deceased for identification.

This accident is recorded just days after the Ghana National Road Safety Commission (GNRS) reported of a twenty percent (20%) decrease in road carnage in the 2022 statistics.

In the said report, the Ghana National Road Safety Authority (GNRSA) indicated that the number of accidents and the causalities recorded so far for 2022 is an improvement on the figures recorded within the same period in 2021, where a total of 8,188 crashes were recorded with a total of 1,454 deaths and 8,188 injuries.
